Family Cars that Don't Cost a Fortune!

What does a car need to be? What do YOU need it for? Is it just a big metal box on wheels? All valid questions but we are here to find you the best bang for your buck!

According to statistics we have gathered most people will spend anywhere from £15,000 up to around £25,000. But we aren't here to find you one in that range. We are here to find a bargain! So let's set the budget at £10,000.

Here's our Top 5 Contenders!

5. Škoda Octavia 2014-2021 £5,000-£10,000

The Škoda Octavia is an impressive compact car that strikes a perfect balance between practicality, comfort, and performance. Known for its spacious interior, the Octavia offers ample legroom and a generous boot, making it an excellent choice for families and those needing extra cargo space. Its design combines modern aesthetics with a hint of sophistication, while high-quality materials enhance the overall feel.

Under the bonnet you'll find a bunch of different engine options which might make it confusing. So here's the gist of it. If you're after a reliable, low maintenance mile muncher, the 2.0 diesel is the one to have! You'll find average mpg figures of 62mpg and tax is just £35!! This 2.0 diesel also has a fruitier brother called the VRS which you'll find 181hp under your right foot which will launch you from 0-60 in just 7.6 seconds.

If diesel isn't for you there's an equally good 1.4 TSI petrol which is ideal for short daily commutes and delivers a whopping 54mpg too!

Things to watch out for!

Both the petrol and diesels above both use timing belts so make sure they have been done in the lifetime of the car to give you piece of mind before buying.

In summary, the Škoda Octavia is a versatile and reliable compact car that excels in providing space, comfort, and efficiency. Its blend of modern technology and practicality makes it an ideal choice for families and everyday drivers alike.

4. Ford Focus 2015-2021 £4,000-£10,000

The Ford Focus offers a dynamic driving experience combined with a stylish design and a well-appointed interior. Known for its sharp handling and responsive steering, it delivers both fun and practicality, making it perfect for daily commutes and longer journeys. The cabin features quality materials, modern technology, and ample space for passengers and cargo. With a range of efficient engines and advanced safety features, the Focus provides a reliable and economical choice for buyers seeking a compact car that doesn't compromise on performance or comfort. Features such as Android auto and Apple car play really bring this car up to modern day standards.

So what's the engine to pick? Yet again many options to pick from! We think the 1.5 diesel is TDCi is a no brainer. Packing 118hp means you'll never be struggling for power and the low end torque from a diesel gives you a towing capacity of 1400kg! Delivering a mind boggling average of 74mpg means you'll barely need to fill up!

What to look out for?

If petrol cars are your thing then be careful as the plucky 1.0 Ecoboost engine is prone to wet belt issues and full engine replacements needed done. So we suggest to stay away from them if possible.

3. Seat Leon 2014-2020 £5,000-£10,000

The Seat Leon is a standout compact car that combines sporty styling with practicality and performance. Its sleek design catches the eye, while the interior boasts high-quality materials and a user-friendly infotainment system. The Leon offers a comfortable ride and sharp handling, making it enjoyable to drive in both urban and highway settings. With a variety of efficient engines and a spacious boot, it caters well to families and everyday commuters alike. Overall, the Seat Leon delivers an excellent blend of style, comfort, and dynamic performance, making it a compelling choice in the compact segment.

What's the one to have? Well, both the 1.6 diesel and 2.0 diesel both offer fabulous mpg and performance some of which fall into the lower tax bracket which is bonus! The petrol's are all good too so no matter which one you pick you won't have issues. In my personal opinion the FR trim level is the crème de la crème as it has many standard extras such as Apple car play, sat nav, parking sensors and many more!

2. BMW 3 Series 2015-2017 £8,000-£10,000

The BMW 3 Series is a benchmark in the compact executive car segment, renowned for its exceptional blend of performance, luxury, and technology. With its sporty handling and powerful engine options, the 3 Series offers a thrilling driving experience while maintaining a smooth ride. The interior is meticulously crafted, featuring high-quality materials and advanced infotainment systems that enhance comfort and connectivity. Ample space for passengers and luggage makes it practical for both daily commutes and long journeys. Overall, the BMW 3 Series is a compelling choice for those seeking a dynamic and refined driving experience without compromising on style or comfort.

If you're after a drivers car, this is it! BMW being a brand that prides itself as the "Ultimate Driving Machine" never fails to disappoint and it is no different with the 3 series. Offered both in a saloon and touring (estate) variants , the 3 series has everyone's needs covered.

Get the 2015 and later!

Pre 2015 both petrol and diesel 4 cylinder engines were powered by the troublesome N47 and N20 engines. Post 2015 BMW have resolved the timing chain issues and these later cars have been seen to do well into the 300,000 mile range (That's further than it is to the moon!). If you're lucky enough to snatch up a six cylinder, you've got the best of the bunch. So why pick the BMW over competitors? Well, what BMW offer is quality and that is seen throughout the car. From the soft leather seats to the superior technology, the 3 series has it all!

1. Volkswagen Golf 2014-2020 £6,000-£10,000

The Volkswagen Golf stands out as one of the best family cars due to its perfect combination of space, comfort, and reliability. Its roomy interior offers ample legroom and cargo capacity, making it ideal for family outings and daily use. The Golf's high-quality build and advanced safety features ensure peace of mind, while its efficient engine options provide excellent fuel economy. Additionally, the intuitive infotainment system and versatile configuration options cater to modern family needs. Overall, the Mk7 Golf delivers practicality, performance, and a touch of style, making it a top choice for families.

The mark 7 Golf is the definition of versatile! VW offer it it so many configurations its unbelievable and not one of them is bad! From high performance Golf Rs, to 1 litre city cruisers, to offroad variants to electric ones, the list is endless. And all this means is that there are so many options to fit absolutely everyone's needs. You'll find learner drivers to celebrities driving the golf so what's not to love!

So at the end of the day what's the best option?
If you're after something economical that will eat up the miles on the motorway and give you plenty of space for the whole family, the 2.0 diesel estate will fit your every need.
If you're after something to zip about town in that will reduce your carbon footprint, why not give the e-golf a go? Being fully electric means yes you will need to plug it in but just think of the Zero emissions!!
My favourite to last! For the person who wants to feel a bit of performance without the compromise of a sports car. The Golf GTI. The perfect all rounder. Delivering 220-230hp means that you'll have a car that is not just practical and reliable but most importantly...FUN!!
